Yarmouth Town Libraries Summer Reading Kick-off

On June 25, 2008 at 6:00pm the Yarmouth Town Libraries kicked off the 2008 “Wild Reads at your library” Summer Reading Program. Over 160 enthusiastic participants swarmed to the South Yarmouth Library for a magnificent performance by Brett "Ooch" Outchcunis.  Yo-Yos galore were flying and fun was had by all. Readers were informed how their reading could help a local organization. This will be Yarmouth’s 4th community-based summer reading program. We will be working to help the Dennis Yarmouth Ecumenical Council for the Prevention of Homelessness.

Visit any of the Yarmouth Town Libraries for more information on how to participate in our reading program this summer.

We would like to thank our local sponsors, Library Associations and Friends groups for their generosity and support of our 2008 Summer Reading Program!

NEW BOOKS TO CHECKOUT

Judy Moody and Stink: The Holly Joliday – Megan McDonald

Judy Moody is making a list and checking it twice, but all her brother, Stink, wants this year is snow. It hasn’t snowed on Christmas in Virginia in more than a hundred years, however, so what are the chances that that will change? Enter the new mailman, Mr. Jack Frost, who not only looks like a jolly old elf but also seems to know a lot about weather patterns, has a fondness for the cold, and works looooooong hours during the holiday season.

The Willoughbys – Lois Lowry

Abandoned by their ill-humored parents to the care of an odious nanny, Tim, the twins, Barnaby A and Barnaby B, and their sister, Jane, attempt to fulfill their roles as good old fashioned children. Following the models set in lauded tales from A Christmas Carol to Mary Poppins, the four Willoughbys hope to attain their proscribed happy ending too, or at least a satisfyingly maudlin one.

Trucks Roll! – George Ella Lyon

Trucks bring ice cream. Trucks bring blocks, books and bulldozers, dolls and socks.

Through mountains and flatlands, past deserts and towns, the trucks are rolling! With its rhyming text and bold illustrations, Trucks Roll! invites kids along on a day in a trucker's life and shows that many things we enjoy depend on the trucker's work.

Smash! Crash! (Jon Scieszka's Trucktown) - Jon Scieszka

Best friends Jack and Dan are spending their day doing what they do best - smashing and crashing! All the while a strange shadow is following them around every corner... Who is this new addition to Trucktown? What does she want?

Stand Tall, Abe Lincoln – Judith St. George

Abraham Lincoln grew up poor and without schooling in a Kentucky wilderness and lost his mother before he was ten. It was sparkplug Sally Bush Johnston who married his father, brought a library of books to their log cabin home, and believed in Abe from the beginning. She was an inspiring turning point for young Abe, who went on to become America’s sixteenth and most popular and respected president.
